As in many older homes, enclosed segregated rooms is the norm. But for many modern families open concept living is the desired form of creating family connectivity within a home. This house not only had an enclosed layout but also load bearing walls that needed to be addressed with proper structural reinforcement in order to achieve an open concept space. Two large steel beams had to be introduced with no way of recessing them into the ceiling. Instead of this becoming an eye sore, we decided to embrace the structural beams by cladding them with dark stained rustic barn wood for high contrast. The remainder of the space retains a bright neutral colour palette of soft greys and browns. This space is the perfect example of rustic meets modern.
