Loft living is the truest form of urban living. It’s embracing the raw beauty of industrialism which cities rely upon in order to grow and thrive. But not everyone can live in a concrete box with steel and water pipes hanging above their head. For our clients, a hip city couple, the space had appealing features like high ceilings; large outdoor patio space and urban character that made them snatch this unit up instantly. But the layout was a bit awkward and the kitchen was surprisingly tiny. It didn’t meet their living requirements, so a reno was the only way to transform the space into their own. The clients had a desire to utilize the space more efficiently in terms of storage, with better traffic flow. To create a warm and welcoming feel by replacing the flooring, updating lighting and creating a kitchen that could withstand the preparation of many dinners for friends and family.
“When I first walked into the loft, I thought ‘Wow, what a cool space’,” recalls Alona. The space had great potential but the kitchen was definitely the biggest challenge. It felt so cramped with appliances shoved together; literally the sink was located above the dishwasher! There was a shallow sink and tiny dishwasher that was simply impractical for this couple who loved to entertain and spend loads of time in the kitchen. Fortunately due to an open space layout, we were able to steal some much needed space from other areas such as a pass way that simply ate too much room. The goal was to keep the plumbing and electrical for the stove relatively in the same area for cost purposes, but the fridge got relocated onto a partition wall between the bedroom and kitchen which allowed us to create a large pantry unit that houses many of the couple’s kitchen goods. Even though the space has great height, the actual footprint of the loft is small (720 sqft total). To maintain a light feeling, we introduced light finishes such as white textured cabinet fronts, sandy countertops and light brown rustic floors for texture. The neutral colour palette allows the space to evolve over time with new items being brought in and enjoyed.
